Teach secondary succession with our interactive model!

Ecological succession is the process whereby life colonises (or recolonises) a new place. It happens in distinct stages starting with pioneer organisms through to shrubs and then trees.

Primary succession is what happens in a new place which has not had life before, such as after a glacier has retreated. Secondary succession happens where life was present before but removed, such as when a forest was destroyed by wildfire or cut down.

This model looks at the stages of secondary succession in a coastal forest environment.

Great to compare with our Primary Succession model!
