Primary succession is what happens in a new place which has not had life before, such as after a glacier has retreated. Secondary succession happens where life was present before but lost, such as when a forest was destroyed by wildfire or cut down.

This model looks at the stages of primary succession after a glacier has retreated leaving bare rock.
