There's a tiger in the taiga!
The Siberian taiga (or boreal forest) is the biggest forest on Earth! It covers most of northern Asia stretching from Europe to the Pacific Ocean and is home to many amazing animals such as the Siberian (or Amur) Tiger.
Temperatures range from minus 70°C in the winter to 35°C during in the summer. Much of the forest has permanently frozen soil called permafrost. It is a harsh place but many animals and plants live there including Siberian tiger, brown bear, wolverine, Siberian musk deer, black woodpecker, Siberian chipmunk, wild boar, wolf and moose (elk).
Our model shows how animals and plants are adapted to survive here, their interactions and how they depend upon one another for survival.

Next, they learn about ecosystems, habitats, consumers and producers, food chains, food webs and energy pyramids for this ecosystem. The importance of pests such as the bark beetle is considered.
Plants & animals modelled include: Siberian tiger, moose (elk), brown bear, wolverine, grey wolf, red fox, sable, wild boar, reindeer (caribou), Siberian flying squirrel, black-billed capercaillie, black woodpecker, Siberian chipmunk, Siberian blue robin, northern nutcracker, Siberian larch, Siberian spruce, Scots pine, trembling aspen, downy birch, twinflower, cranberry, lady fern and more!
