Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) are an important model organism for studying genetics. Much of our understanding of the role genes play in body organisation has been learnt from studying genetic mutations in Drosophila. You can show some of these with this model!

First, your students make their colourful model of a fruit fly. Then they use the model to look its external features. Finally they look at different mutations such as white eye, eyeless, antennapedia (leg head mutant), wingless, bithorax and curly wing.
The model shows the major features of an insect including: head, thorax, abdomen, legs, wings, antennae, halteres, compound eyes and more!
