The Burgess Shale in Canada is one of the most important fossil sites in the world. It shows the soft bodied animals that lived in the Cambrian Period 505 million years ago. At this time a massive expansion of the different types of animals on Earth happened called the Cambrian Explosion.

First, your students make their models using the colourful parts. Then, they use it to look at how these organisms were unique and how they are related to modern animals and plants including us! They include fearsome predators such as Anomalocaris, extremely unusual animals, such as Hallucigenia, Opabinia and Marrella, and more familiar animals such as Trilobites and Sponges.
