Teach what hedgerows are and why they are important ecosystems for wildlife with our paper model!

The British countryside is famous for its patchwork of green fields. The edges of these fields are often formed by an important habitat called a hedgerow.

A hedgerow is a line of shrubs and trees at the edge of a field, road, footpath or garden. There are 500,000 miles of hedgerows in Britain!

Over time, hedgerows have become important habitats for many species of wildlife. They provide nesting sites, food sources and corridors for wildlife to move under cover.

Unfortunately, hedgerows are often neglected and poorly maintained or removed to make larger fields. Recently the importance of hedgerows for reducing soil erosion, increasing biodiversity and for carbon capture has been recognized.

Our model shows many of the unique species that live in these habitats, their adaptations, their interactions and how they depend upon one another for survival.

Buy once, print forever!

First, your students make their model using the colourful parts. Then, they use it to look at how organisms are adapted to survive in hedgerows. Plants & animals modelled include: fox, hedgehog, stoat, rabbit, robin, wren, wood mouse, hazel dormouse, red admiral butterfly, stag beetle, field maple, hawthorn, holly, ivy,  stinging nettle, bramble and more!
