Teach your class synapses in an interactive way!

Synapses are connections between nerve cells where electrical nerve impulses are converted into chemical neurotransmitter signals. They are essential for the function of our nervous system.

First your students make their models out of the colourful parts. Then they follow the path of a signal across a synapse.

They start by fusing a synaptic vesicle to the presynaptic membrane and releasing a neurotransmitter. This diffuses across the synaptic cleft and binds to the receptor on the postsynaptic membrane. Ion channels open and cause changes in the postsynaptic membrane that may lead to an action potential if the threshold is passed.
