Bark beetles are insects that help to decompose dead trees in forests but they can also be a serious pest. Adult beetles lay their eggs in the inner bark (phloem) which the larvae eat damaging the tree. This is made worse by a blue fungus that the beetles carry that can kill the tree.

Your students make their colourful model of bark beetles and their bark habitat. They first use the model to look the life cycle of a bark beetle. Then, they look at how the beetles cause damage to trees.

The model can be used to teach the European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) and the North American mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae). It can be used to show an insect life cycle covering metamorphosis.
